The black bears of the Yellowstone Wildlife Sanctuary (YWS) in Red Lodge, Montana are fast asleep, enjoying their hibernation. But despite the snow, ice, and freezing temperatures, there is still a lot going on at the Sanctuary. After the success of Junior Keepers Camp this summer, YWS is starting off the New Year with the return of camp activities for school age children every weekend in February, giving kids the opportunity to see what wildlife does when winter comes!

Each weekend will feature a different theme reflecting Greater Yellowstone wildlife and how various species have adapted for surviving the harsh cold of winter. Campers will get to see firsthand how bobcats and hares benefit from their natural snowshoes, where reptiles and amphibians go during winter, and much more.

Add to Calendar 2/24/2024 2/24/2024 America/Denver Annual Backcountry Film Festival at the Roman This event is hosted by the Beartooth Recreational Trails Association (BRTA).

“Presented by Winter Wildlands Alliance, Backcountry Film Festival manifests the power of humans and their spirit. We screen cinematic stories of outdoor stewardship, grassroots policy and advocacy work, backcountry adventure, and snow cinema by human-powered advocates, athletes, brands, activists, adventures, and outdoor enthusiasts.

Celebrating the connecting between humans and wild winters. A collage of human-powered stories and backcountry-inspired experiences. Backcountry Film Festival ignites wild conversations and inspires action to communities that celebrate the present while looking towards the future.

Every winter, BCFF tours 100+ cities and is hosted by local retailers, grassroots groups, outdoor affinity groups, and many more community organizations. Funds raised stay in the local community to support human-powered recreation and conservation efforts, winter education and avalanche/safety programs and to raise awareness of winter management issues.

The 19th Annual Backcountry Film Festival is screening documentaries and ski movies about athletic pursuit in the mountains, artistic vision, friendship, and how the snowsports community is adapting to a changing environment.”

The Red Lodge Ski-Joring Association has been hosting the National Finals Ski-Joring Races since 1980. Ski-Joring originated in Scandinavian countries as a form of winter transportation.
The west has transformed this into an action packed competition wherein teams of horse, rider and skier negotiate a 700+ foot course, the horse and rider taking a track to the inside of the course while the skier in tow, negotiates 20-some slalom gates and four jumps in hopes of completing two fast, clean runs. That isn’t so easy at speeds sometimes topping 25 mph.

Coming from a long line of weathered Nordics, who have eventually found their way to the rugged landscape of Southwest Montana, she has a bloodline of stories to tell.
“She’s a powerhouse singer who can boom like Etta and croon like Ella, and she writes visual lyrics that draw upon her the mountains and streams that define the Last Best Place as much as they do her own well-rounded sensibilities.” —Skip Anderson, The Bozone.com
Marcedes plays a mix of originals as well as lively covers including but not limited to Emmylou Harris, Gram Parsons, Lucinda Williams, The Band, John Prine, Micky and the Motorcars, and so many more!
